(WHAS11) -- They call it curb appeal. And it's literally worth thousands of dollars. According to Angie's List a well landscaped yard can add 7 to 14 percent to the value of your home, but you don't have to spend thousands to see those savings.
"I think they should start with aggressively pruning back their shrub before they spend a lot of money. They would be well served to aggressively prune them back and see what they have,” Rick Davis, Davis Family Lawn Care, said.
Davis makes a living doing lawn care and he said he prefers people hire companies like his Davis Family Lawn Care to landscape their homes. But he said he understands if homeowners prefer to do the work themselves.
There are plenty of weekend warriors who would prefer to save money by doing their own yard work.
"If you're working on a limited budget for your landscaping project you can still work with a landscaper. a good landscaper can help you work up a plan that can be done in phases: to be broken out over three years so that you're never over-extended on your budget," Angie Bowman, founder Angie’s List, said.
When homes are worth 200, 300, 400 thousand dollars and more 7 to 14 percent of the value is a big chunk - maybe too big of a chunk to try to manage by yourself.
The most common landscaping problems are plants and shrubs that are too big or overgrown, drainage issues and improperly applied mulch.
