LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Do you call you local repair shop to check up on your car before you go on vacation? Well that may be too late. WHAS11's Andy Treinen has the full report.

In today's world we're getting more and more out of our cars. More miles, better gas millage, and better performance. But, all those benefits require some much needed tender loving care.

Shop owner Kevin Beck says oil changes every 3,000 to 5,000 miles is the key.

According to the nation's leading provider of consumer reviews Angie's List finding the right mechanic is a process.

They also get to know you and that will make them less likely to saddle you with unneeded repairs down the road.

It's also great to have that go-to mechanic when you're shopping for a used car.

That way you can bring it to the shop first to find out what needs service now and down the road. Angie's List says you should be prepared to spend between $1,000 and $2,000 on getting a used car up to speed.

If you have a consumer tip for Andy, he would like to hear from you. Send him an email to consumerwatch@whas11.com.
