Consumer Watch: Flooding causing damage to homes in Sellersburg

(WHAS11) - Helen Jean Harmon has lived on Alberta for 21 years. And for the first 16 years she had no problem with flooding.

But then the Indiana Department of Transportation expanded I-65, removed a tree barrier between her home and the highway, raised the interstate, and filled in land both north and south of these homes.

After one round of flooding, Harmon’s’ brother called and “asked Harmon if she wanted to get out of the house”. Her brother came over to the house with a boat and got her out.

Pat Robertson is a State Representative and has been to the area many times. On his most recent visit he brought an IN-DOT engineer who surveyed the topography in search of a solution.

Robertson mentioned: “they have had people live in this area for 35 years and not had flooding, and this year they have had flooding 3 times.”

People have told Robertson that their homes are now worthless. They think work on I-65 has turned their community into a flood zone rendering.

Representative Robertson says this isn't the only flooding problem in Sellersburg but does say “that a solution is in the works.”

Harmon says that the “fans and dehumidifier could use a break.”
