(WHAS11) - Getting the best bang for your buck, that's the focus of this edition of Consumer Watch. There are literally hundreds of dollars worth of freebies at the Kentucky State Fair. You can't go far at the fair without a free opportunity and if you can't find them you may want to get your eyes checked. And no matter your age the options are endless; free catalogues, free seminars, free shipping and free massage. There are free fudge samples from various vendors and a free body fat analysis to keep you in check.
But the most valuable freebies are probably in South Wing A and B. WHAS11’s Andy Treinen started his health screenings with a check of his skin. Melanoma is diagnosed at the fair frequently. ''Well sometimes they're relieved that they've gotten an answer and they know what to do. Sometimes they'll start crying. All sorts of reactions," says Dr. Denise Puthuff. Andy’s blood was drawn to check for cancer.
And yes, prostate cancer is a real killer for men over 40. Evy McKemie says they have over 200 abnormal screenings at the fair each year. The doctor told WHAS11’s Andy Treinen that he’s good for another 100,000 miles. "There are no symptoms of early prostate cancer so early detection is the key. Statistically speaking, one in six men is diagnosed with prostate cancer, 200,000 will die this year," says Evy McKemie. Lou Mack's dock dog thrill act is one of many free daily shows and there are free concerts every night, And no trip to the fair would be complete without the animals because they are always sure to bring a free smile to your face.
