LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) --When the rain finally clears, driving around in a clean shiny car feels good -- especially on a warm summer day.

Getting your car washed and waxed on a regular basis is not only good for your look while you're cruising around town; it's also good for the car, and there's real value in that. "I think it helps in the resale of the car when you go try to sell it or trade it in," said car enthusiast Bill Kortepeter. Kortepeter has his car professionally detailed regularly at a price he's willing to pay for a new looking ride.

The consumer website, Angie's List, says folks like Bill should expect to pay $100 or more for the service.

That regular deep cleaning not only removes dirt, bugs and other elements from our cars, it also protects them and it's called detailing for a reason.

It starts with a thorough vacuum in the cab, under the seats and in the trunk. "And then we literally lather up everything and scrub it with anti bacterial soap including the doors, dash, seats, carpet, floor mats, steering while, gear shift, cup holder, sun visors and seat belt. So, in that, it's much more detailed and thorough than just your standard every week car wash," says automotive detailer Roderick Darring.

Some auto detailing shops offer pick-up and drop-off as well. Some even offer mobile detailing while your car is in the driveway at home or better yet in the parking lot at work.

As to how often we should be washing our cars, Angie's list asked highly rated companies that very question. Most experts recommended a car wash every week, waxed four times a year and professionally detailed at least once a year.
