LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Thousands of Kentuckiana families are headed south for Spring Break. But spring break scammers are looking to take advantage of last minute travelers.
The Better Business Bureau monitors the travel industry and of the almost 4,000 industries, travel consistently ranks in the top 25 for number of complaints costing consumers as much as $10 billion a year.
Don't be fooled by professional looking travel mailers, websites or e-mails. Few legitimate businesses can afford giving away real value. Always check those businesses with the BBB. Get any cancellation and refund policies in writing and take those copies with you.
If you work through a travel agency or service, independently confirm your reservations through your airline, hotel and car rental company directly. If they don't have them, neither do you. It's also always a good idea to pay with a credit card in case you need to dispute charges.
If you're driving to Florida, look for cheaper gas prices between here and there. The average price is $3.63 for a gallon of gas in Kentucky, $3.62 in Florida. But in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama gas is gong for #3.40 something.
