(WHAS11) -- If you are hoping to pick up a retail job during the busy holiday season now is the time to start.

The outlook for holiday hiring looks a little more merry and bright than in recent years. Here in Kentuckiana UPS, Horsehoe casino and Kroger are just a few of the businesses hiring for the holiday.
Among the major retailers leading holiday hiring:
-- Toys R' Us plans to hire 45,000 holiday workers, 5,000 more than last year.
-- Kohl's, more than 52,000, up 10 percent over 2011.
-- Walmart, 50,000.
-- and Target, between 80,000 and 90,000, slightly lower than last year, the retailer says, because they have hired more permanent workers.
Holiday job seekers should look outside the big box too. For example, Kohl's will add another 5,700 positions at its distribution centers. Amazon will bring on 5,000 seasonal workers. The major shipping companies will also hire extra hands to keep up with the holiday rush.
Start your research early because applications will start piling up between October 1 and Halloween.

Challenger, Gray and Christmas also advises applying at establishments where you are a frequent customer. That way you'll have some  knowledge of the store and products, that can set you apart from the pack.
