Consumer Watch: Couple uses local company to help clear credit disputes

(WHAS11) - A Louisville couple hoping to re-finance their home couldn't get a loan because of two long standing problems on their credit report.

Deena Keck and her husband are both blind. And along with their seeing eye dogs they get along quite well in their Clifton home. But recently Deena realized she needed some help getting two problems cleared from their credit reports.

Deena is a loyal WHAS11 viewer and had seen the station get results. But getting credit forgiven is a tall order. So WHAS11 contacted Ben Carter at the Legal Aid Society for help.

"She was trying to re-finance her home with her husband and one of the barriers they were facing was 2 negative credit reports," says Carter.

Deena says cutting through the red tape is every consumers challenge and Legal Aid had the scissors. Carter wrote a couple of letters and got a misunderstanding with the Dish Network cleared up in no time. The problem with AT&T was over a phone Deena bought in 2003. She returned it, but AT&T says they never got it.

Before Carter got involved, a collection agency wanted $552.92 to clear the credit.

"Credit collection agencies are not known for caving very often so when I called Deena and told her that we weren't going to have to pay anything on this debt to get her house re-financed, she was thrilled." says Carter.

And just Monday a new credit check was run, and the Kecks were free and clear.

Legal Aid exists to provide legal representation to the most vulnerable people in society. Veterans, low income families, and the elderly are all eligible for free services.
