LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A Bardstown Road staple is now "closed for repairs" after police said 40-year-old Benjamin Stimler crashed his SUV into Za's Pizza Pub around 2 a.m. Sunday.
Za's owner gave WHAS11 pictures which show the gaping hole that was the business' front doors... both of which are now shattered and must be replaced.
Employees said the man driving tried to leave the scene but good Samaritans stepped in and held him there until police arrived.
Brewery "I came in today and I was just really shocked,” Zach Cunningham said.
Cunningham works at Cumberland Brewery, across the street, and said this isn't the first time he's seen something like this happen to a business in the Highlands.
"It’s scary but its Bardstown road so I feel like stuff like that happens more than it should,” Cunningham said.
Police said the wreck caused roughly $5,000 of structural damage. Za's employees said they're thankful no one was hurt and posted this on their Facebook page- it reads, "Friends, PLEASE please please don't drive drunk and don't let your friends do it either. $15 on an Uber or Lyft will save you a lifetime of remorse, several thousand dollars in fines, and possible criminal and civil charges."
Other businesses also used the incident as an opportunity to discouraging people from drinking and driving. One restaurant across the street displayed a sign that reads "Please refrain from creating a drive thru after drinking."
Za's owner said they hope to re-open within the coming days.
