(WHAS11) -- On April 25, the Senate voted to advance a bill that would impose state and local taxes on purchases made online.

Right now, states can make shops collect sales tax only if they are physically located in the state, but if this bill becomes law, the sales tax collected online would go to the state where the shopper lives.

A final vote on the issue takes place after the Senate returns from its week-long vacation on May 6.
