(WHAS11) -- In Kentucky, nearly 500,000 people are eligible for a refundable federal tax credit. Middle and low income families can apply for the earned income tax credit this year that, on average, is about $2,200.
Rep. John Yarmuth (D) says, "Most all of that money gets spent. It's estimated about $15 million in the local economy. That helps businesses, that helps people keep their stores open and its very, very important."
The IRS says that 15 to 20 percent of eligible workers do not claim their benefits and most of this is due to lack of awareness.
There are more than 200 free tax preparation sites across the state of Kentucky where you can get help filing your taxes.
