LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A big step forward Tuesday, June 18, for the Ohio River Bridges Project.

Crews officially broke ground on the new Downtown Crossing.

A public groundbreaking ceremony for the Louisville side of the bridge at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Waterfront Park kicked off the construction. Actual construction began  at 5:30 p.m. after the groundbreaking ceremony.

The Downtown Crossing includes a new bridge over the Ohio River, a re-design of Spaghetti Junction and renovations to the Kennedy Bridge.

It's projected the first car will drive over the new bridge by April 2016. But before that there will be congestion.  Most notably in July, the ramp from I-64 eastbound to I-65 southbound will be closed.

WHAS11's Joe Aronold is at the ceremony and will have live reports throughout the evening newscasts.
