ST. MATTHEWS, Ky. (WHAS11) - Several mall-goers and deal-seekers were subject to a violent outburst at Mall St. Matthews early Friday morning.
The fight started during the mall's "Black Friday" expanded hours, around midnight.
The reason for the fight is not clear at the moment, but Twitter user Nick Shannon caught it on video:
St. Matthews Police confirms that they arrived at the scene one minute after receiving the report. By that time, mall security had already broken up the fight. Both the participants had left the area without being identified. There were no other incidents during the night.
The police are concerned that the fight may have been staged. If that is found to be the case, they plan on prosecuting those involved.
Authorities will continue to have an increased presence at Mall St. Matthews and Oxmoor Center.
The Mall issued the following statement:
The incident that occurred on Thanksgiving night was an isolated incident that was immediately handled by security. The safety and well-being of our shoppers, retailers and employees are always our top priorities. The mall has a customized public safety program that entails different measures for various scenarios. We do not discuss our public safety measures because doing so would compromise our efforts. We are expecting a busy and successful holiday shopping season, and I want to emphasize, safety and security are our priorities every day.
Mall fights have often accompanied the frenzied crowds and competitive nature of Black Friday deals, which are often limited in number.
