LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – In the last hours of a three-day weekend a student is preparing for surgery instead of attending classes on Tuesday.

It was sad news to Smoketown residents who came home to a crime scene.

“Sixteen? He’s still a baby, he’s a baby. Somebody’s baby and those [who] probably did it are babies,” resident June Alexander said.

Just after 5 p.m. police were called to a home in the 600 block of East Ormsby where they found a teenage victim shot in the upper torso. According to witnesses, he may have been chased there by other young men.

“We believe anywhere from three to 6 black male juveniles were involved so we are combing the area looking for these people,” Sgt. Robert Biven of Louisville Metro Police said.

Early on, investigators weren’t sure where the shooting happened and covered blocks in crime scene tape.

Police believe there were multiple people involved but are unclear if there was more than one shooter.

Though no one has confirmed what led to the shooting, one neighbor feels the problem and the solution are one and the same.

“It's the parents.  Simple as that, it's the parents,” the neighbor said.

The juvenile is currently at University Hospital where his injuries aren’t life threatening.

Police have detained three people but there have been no arrests or charges at this time.
