Christmas fund set up for employees after fire breaks out at Sam's Food & Spirits

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WHAS11) -- A popular New Albany restaurant sustained heavy damage overnight after a fire broke out around midnight.

Firefighters were called out to Sam's Food and Spirits on Payne Kohler Road off Charlestown Road late Monday night.

Crews worked through the early morning hours battling the fire and said they believe it started in the back of the building.

Charlestown Road was shut down for several hours while firefighters worked to contain the fire. The roadway has since reopened.

The Kiwanis Club of New Albany has set up a Christmas donation account for the employees of Sam's Food and Spirits.

Donations can be dropped off at River Valley Bank in Sellersburg, IN or mailed to the Kiwanis Club of New Albany.
