(WHAS11)  Saturday may have felt like a good day for a swim, but how about swimming… the entire length of the Ohio River?!

That is what a teacher from Tennessee is doing, and she is passing through Louisville on Saturday.

Fifty-four-year-old Mimi Hughes is inspiring people along the way.

Hughes challenged herself to the nearly 1,000 mile swim down the Ohio, to raise money and awareness to educating girls and women around the world.

She started in Pittsburgh in May and she will end up in Cairo, Illinois in July.

Hughes swims 20 miles a day and says it’s the people she meets along the way who keep her going.

“The one thing I’ve seen is great people.  The people in the Ohio River Valley have opened up their homes, [comped] hotel rooms, fed us; everyone along the Ohio River has helped to make this swim a success,” said Hughes.

She passed mile 600 on Saturday and will spend Saturday night in Louisville, and start her swim again Sunday.
