INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Police in Indianapolis say a 22-year-old woman fleeing from officers was critically injured when she crashed her car into a utility pole several blocks after officers had broken off the chase.

A police spokesman says officers tried early Friday to stop the car that had been reported stolen, but the driver fled from officers for a few miles along major streets on the city's south side before they lost sight of the car.

Officers continuing on the same street soon found that the car had gone out of control and slammed into the pole. Police say Erica Shelton of Indianapolis was ejected from the car and was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police say Shelton faced arrest warrants on dealing methamphetamine charges.
