(USA Today) -- After arguing with her family — and drinking — Friday night in Riverside, Calif., 37-year-old Soukvilay Barton headed for her BMW convertible in the garage.

Her father, Bounmy Rajsombath, 69, first tried to talk her out of driving while intoxicated, KTLA reports, but when that didn't work, he stood behind the car in an effort to force her not to drive — but police say Barton backed up and ran right over him, killing him, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Barton stopped her reverse from the garage to the driveway when she realized what she'd done, but her father died at a nearby hospital.

She was arrested and is being held in jail on suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter, the Press-Enterprise reports.

Rajsombath, a high-ranking military officer in Laos who aided the U.S. military and ran a refugee camp in Thailand for people fleeing Laos during the Vietnam War, came to the US in 1979 with his wife. They have two sons and two daughters.

Barton was seen sitting in a chair in the front yard where her father was killed, sobbing, before being taken away in handcuffs, LAist reports.
