Coroner ID's victim in early Sunday Middletown crash

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A young woman who died in a single-vehicle accident Sunday morning has been identified, according to the coroner.

Coroner Jim Wesley has identified the woman as 21-year-old Katie Kapple.

Authorities were called to the intersection of Shelbyville Road and North Madison Avenue around 4:30 a.m. after they say Kapple lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a utility pole.

Police believe the Ford Explorer Kappe was driving was traveling at a high rate of speed causing her to lose control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway and striking the pole.

She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police say there were no other passengers in the vehicle.

Investigators are still working to determine if speed and rain were contributing factors to the crash and have not ruled out if alcohol may have played a role.
