LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A house in the 4500 block of West Market Street sat abandoned for 15 years before Connie Cash got her hands on it.

“It took a while – it took at least 6 months for me to actually be able to live in the house,” Cash said.

She put in hundreds of hours of work to be able to live in the home but during Mayor Greg Fischer’s “Give a Day” week of service, she received a big boost.

Volunteers from the Fuller Center helped renovate the home along with three others.

Now, it’s a safe haven for Cash and her two young children.

“I like the fact that I actually live in a house now because I have a roof over me and my kids’ head. It’s basically a solid foundation for us to start off instead of having to go move place to place,” she said.

Cash is only the second person in her entire family to own a home.

She is currently working on her degree in social work from Jefferson Community and Technical College.

Mayor Fischer’s “Give a Day” runs from April 12 through April 20.
