HARLAN, Ky. (AP) — In a story Aug. 22 about wild horses in eastern Kentucky, The Associated Press reported erroneously that 28 horses were found shot to death. Kentucky State Police said a detective and trooper responded to such a report but found only one deceased horse and weren't able to determine the cause of death because of decomposition.

A corrected version of the story is below:

Wild horse found dead in southeastern Kentucky, other missing horses accounted for

HARLAN, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky State Police say one wild horse was found dead in southeastern Kentucky.

A caller told police 28 horses had been shot, but police said Detective Craig Miller and Trooper Kenny Sergent determined there was only one dead horse. Police said Miller confirmed through witness statements that the rest of the horses from the herd are accounted for.

The case remained under investigation.
