FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — More than a dozen teenagers were injured Thursday when a water slide collapsed at a sub-division community pool.
According to Tom Rogers with Clay County Fire Rescue, about 15 kids were on the water slide located in the Eagle Harbor neighborhood just after 7 p.m.
Two teens were taken to the hospital with with non life-threatening injuries and 11 more people were treated for minor injuries on the scene. Rogers said the scene was chaotic after the break, so the injury numbers are estimates. Most of the injuries were minor and included abrasions, cuts and bruises.
Officials believe the slide collapsed due to the weight of the teens.
There was an event for the Fleming Island High School band going on at the pool when the slide collapsed.
Kristi Gomez has called the Eagle Harbor community home for the last eight years. She drove by and saw the aftermath of the collapse.
"It's startling! I really just stopped and I put my hand over my mouth," Gomez said. "We always joke and say this is our happy place. Now it will be different coming here."
