(WHAS11) -- Mayor Greg Fischer was joined by Congressman John Yarmuth and members of the Louisville Metro Council Sunday to recognize veterans of the Vietnam War.

The ceremony was held Sunday afternoon at the Mayor's Gallery at Metro Hall where South Vietnamese and US soldiers who fought in Vietnam were recognized for their bravery and sacrifice.

Mayor Fischer presented a signed copy of the resolution passed this week by Metro Council, which recognizes the South Vietnamese flag as the flag of the Vietnamese-American community.

The South Vietnamese flag is supposed to be a symbol of resilience, freedom and democracy.
