LOUISVILLE, Ky.-- Germina Cruz's friends and family were shocked by her unexpected death on Monday night. The past few they've rallied together, creating an online fund and now setting up a bake sale at the University of Louisville raising thousands of dollars for her funeral.
"I made vanilla cake because I'm very simple," friend Ashley O'Neil said.
Lots of cookies, cupcakes, and sweets in honor of a woman whose smile could light up a room.
"If anyone knew Germina, they knew she was a beautiful person. She was always laughing and ready to have a good time," friend Ariel Bigham said.
And she loved to dance.
"Even in middle school, me and my sister and her would make up dances together. That's all we did to have fun," Bigham said.
Cruz was killed in a car accident on Monday night near Bowman Field. Her boyfriend, former University of Kentucky walk-on Kerry Benson, was driving when police said the car slid on a patch of ice and hit a utility pole.
24-year-old Benson and 23-year-old Cruz both died. As news of the tragic accident spread across social media, friends struggled to believe the Xtreme indoor football dancer was really gone.
"The last time I saw her she was just very loving. It just breaks my heart that this could happen to someone so young and so innocent," O'Neil said.
Despite the grief, Cruz’s friends went right to work to help her family out.
"Her best friend Anisha made one of those accounts and we've already raised more than $10,000," Bigham said.
In just 24 hours, nearly $12,000 dollars has been donated to that gofundme.com account for Cruz, surpassing the goal of $10,000. The proceeds from the bake sale will help with the funeral expenses as well.
"People have been more than willing to just help out for a great cause. She was a beautiful person and inside and out," O'Neil said.
