LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The University of Louisville's long-term effort to save energy on campus is surpassing their original goals.
UofL says fuel use on the Belknap campus has dropped nearly 50-percent. Electricity and water use are down around 30 percent.
The university launched the $21 million initiative in 2009. It included energy efficient lighting and updated heating and cooling strategies to cut water consumption.
The numbers are from 2011, the first full year after the improvements were finished.
