LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- When you drive down the Watterson Expressway you’ll soon notice something different. A new billboard is doing up in an effort to protect Jefferson County Public School bus drivers.
The billboard says ‘Help Stop Bus Violence’ with this phone number 814-3042. The Teamsters Local 783 is responsible for the billboard and represents JCPS bus drivers.
The billboard is scheduled to go up Thursday night at the Watterson Expressway and Poplar Level Road.
The drivers are hoping the sign will make district leaders pay attention to how students have been acting and in some cases it’s the parents causing the problems.
Some drivers say the fear is so bad they’ve asked for police on the bus.
“We’ve had new buses destroyed on the inside where knives and cut seats. They light paper on fire and throw paper balls towards the bus driver. They hit then in the back of the head with a Coke bottle or water bottle,” said John Stovall, Teamsters Local 783. “Hoping it will grab the districts attention, school board members attention and that they take a harder look at how we handle this on school buses.”
JCPS officials say they agree with the bus drivers and say they are working with them to make sure buses stay safe and that all students and drivers are secure.
