(ABC News) -- It's not called the Group of Death for nothing.

The United States was just seconds away from reaching the round of 16 at the World Cup. Up 2-1, Portugal broke American hearts with a goal by Silvestre Varela in the fifth minute of stoppage time to tie the game.

The 2-2 score means the USA will face Germany on Thursday with its sights set on a win. No one from the group, which also includes Ghana and Portugal, has yet qualified.

Nani had put Portugal ahead after just 5 minutes, but the Americans equalized in the 64th minute on a goal by Jermaine Jones. The Americans then took the lead with Clint Dempsey with nine minutes left to play.

Earlier in the day, over in Group H, Belgium needed a late goal to edge Russia 1-0. In the second match, Algeria defeated South Korea 4-2 in another goalfest.

The World Cup features 32 nations -- placed in eight groups with four teams apiece -- and a total of 64 games.
