LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- In South Louisville, Fourth Division Louisville Metro Police officers were participating in the same community-building event divisions around the city and law enforcement agencies around the country were holding at the same time: National Night Out.
But the simple message of stronger neighborhoods connected with police was confronted by an unfortunate irony just a few blocks away: a shooting at the Manslick Apartments that sent two men to the hospital.
The victims have non-life threatening injuries according to police and were taken to University Hospital. Officers have not made an arrest.
Police say several people were in a first floor apartment but think it began in the parking lot. Sixteen evidence markers where shell casings laid on the ground were outside the building, and bullets were spread throughout the building.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday, in the middle of the National Night Out event at Wyandotte Park.
During the event, police gave out 1,000 donated backpacks filled with school supplies. Kids had fun on horse and pony rides, played on the bounce house, and toured a police helicopter as well as saw SWAT team equipment.
