Statement from Scott Jennings, Bailey family spokesman

A fire destroyed the home of Irv and Cathy Bailey early this morning. Irv and Cathy are in the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Two children were killed in this tragedy, and the Bailey family is requesting privacy at this time of great loss.

-----------

It was a deadly start this Christmas morning in Glenview after a fire killed two children at a home owned by Irving and Cathy Bailey, a well known Republican and philanthropist.

The fire broke out at about 4 a.m. in the 6400 block of Longview Lane. According to Henry Ott, Metro Arson Squad chief, seven people were staying at the opposite end of the home from where the fire started.

Alarms in the home had sounded during the fire, but it wasn’t enough time for two children inside the home to escape.  There are conflicting reports on the ages of the children, but officials say the children are related to the Baileys.

In a statement to WHAS 11, family spokesman Scott Jennings wrote that Irving and Cathy were seriously injured in the fire, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

“It’s a tragedy to occur on Christmas day and to lose two family members,” Ott said.

Officials say the roof of the home collapsed during the blaze and home is a total loss.

Today’s deaths mark 20 fire fatalities in Jefferson County this year.
