HARDIN COUNTY, Ky. (WHAS11) -- FORT KNOX, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A double shooting has claimed the life of a Fort Knox Soldier and his wife.

According to a news release from Fort Knox, military police found the two victims with gunshot wounds in their on-post residence early Friday morning. One of the individuals was found deceased and the other died shortly after police got there.

Authorities say they received a 911 call from the residence and the four responding officers heard gunfire inside.

Those who live in the Ft. Knox community are stunned by the tragedy.
"Honestly, I never expected anything like that to happen you know it's scary thinking the world has come to things like this happening at all, but especially right here where we are at," Carrie Radcliff said.

The U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command says the incident is likely a result of a domestic dispute, but that a final determination has yet to be made.
The last murder at Fort Knox was in 1993.

The names of the victims will not be released by authorities until 24 hours after the families are notified; two children at the home at the time of the shootings.

"That's heartbreaking to know kids are involved at all in something that. I know soldiers are under a lot of pressure, but it's hard to believe it would come to where kids would be involved," Terry Sweetman said.

Sweetman has a brother-in-law in the military and says he often worries about
his transition back from duty. He worries his fear may have played a role in this apparent murder-suicide.

“I got a brother-in-law that's in the military, and he's going through a lot now hat he's back from Iraq...he's while family is goo through a lot."

The two children were not hurt in the shooting. They are currently in the custody of the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services.
