LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- It is the busiest time of year for UPS and FedEx with millions of deliveries being made every day. However it is also a busy time for thieves who are taking packages right off porches.
Imagine waiting for a package that never seems to arrive, instead it is snatched by thieves. It would have anyone saying “Bah, humbug!”
"Crimes of opportunity in terms of theft are on the rise," Dwight Mitchell with Louisville Metro Police said.
"I think it's bad because kids won't get gifts some thug is stealing their presents," Louisville resident, Sally Fields said.
"I think it's horrible that anybody can be that inconsiderate to take somebody's gifts that are probably for children," Loriann Felmey said.
There is video circulating of a UPS driver in Las Vegas dropping off packages. A few minutes later, a woman snatches the delivery. More surveillance video captures the same problem. A holiday delivery ruined by a Grinch making a clean getaway.
UPS says there are ways to help prevent yourself from being the target this holiday season.
Mike Mangeot with UPS said you can coordinate your delivery time and buy excess value coverage for things worth $100 up to $50,000.
"They can also sign up for signature required service for a small fee which means you would have to sign for a package before we leave it at your house," Mangeot said.
UPS will deliver more than 28 million packages on Peak Day, December 20. That is equal to 300 packages per second.
With more deliveries from Louisville to around the world, it is a good idea to set up a security camera and keep your receipts.
The company you ordered from may reimburse you so you are not left without gifts under the tree.
