(WHAS 11)--People who live in Indiana have a new option to call 911 they can text it.
The new program is available for Verizon customers only in all counties in the Hoosier State.
First responders say phone calls are still the best way to get immediate help but the texting service is a huge advance for the hearing and speaking impaired or those people in situations where it would be dangerous to be heard.
The program will come at no cost to taxpayers.
Only Verizon customers can successfully send a 911 text.
Sprint, T-mobile, and AT&T should be on board with the service in a few months.
