(WHAS11) - A local teenager is running for office. Andrew Edwards, 18, announced he is running for Jefferson County Commissioner.

Edwards is a Republican and currently attends Doss High School. There are currently no other candidates.

In a news release, Edwards said: “This nation, and state is calling for change, and now we can provide it to them all. I assure everyone that I have done thorough research and I am fully prepared for any responsibility this position has.”

If Edwards is elected, he says he would be the youngest elected official in Kentucky's history.

The full news release:

I, Andrew S. Edwards, am announcing my candidacy to County Commissioner, District C for the Republican Party to the news today. Taking this respoinsibility, I am also making a place in history for the city of Louisville. I would be the youngest candidate (and if I win, the youngest elected official) in the History of Kentucky! Me and my staff have researched the law and have a plan (and a couple backup plans) to achieve this milestone for change in Kentucky. Since this is a vacant position (second time it is on the ballot) AND there is also no candidate we look to section 152 of the Kentucky Constitution which does not say anything about meeting the age requirments (The kentucky revised statutes law does not include county commissioner) so therefore I can run on a technicallity. As a first backup plan, we have supporters in the General Assembly and City Council that will nominate me to be appointed to the candidacy (not to the position itself, as I would rather be popularly elected). I do meet all national stadards and other requirements for an elected official, since at the time of election I will be 18 (and a registed voter), I have been a resident to the district sine I was 5, and I will have the notarized signatures of other registered voters from my party and district. This nation, and state is calling for change, and now we can provide it to them all. I assure everyone that I have done thorough research and I am fully prepared for any responsibility this position has (though, due to current law, it has very little). I thank all my supporters out there, and I hope for the best for the monumental election!

-Andrew Edwards
