MINNEAPOLIS (WHAS11) – Retail giant Target is taking a stance on the growing popularity of carrying guns in their stores.

Target is asking customers not to bring firearms into its stores even where it is allowed by law.

Target CEO John Mulligan says he wants a safe and inviting atmosphere for its shoppers and employees.

Mulligan says bringing firearms into Target creates an environment at odds with family-friendly shopping.

The announcement comes after questions arose in recent weeks about its police on the open carry of firearms in its stores.
