LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- A long time police officer is now officially the Cheif of the Audobon Park Police Department.

Hundreds crowded into the small Audubon Park's city hall for the swearing in of the new chief.

Doug Sweeney is a familiar face around Louisville. Sweeney picked up a few part time shifts with the Audubon Park Police Department after retiring from his post as a Lieutenant with the Louisville Metro Police Department at the end of July 2013.

Sweeney pledged to focus on community poilce work, where everyone knows officers by their first names.

The lawsuit against the department was filed by former officer Kile Nave. Nave claimed he was fired from the department for being gay. The Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission agreed, saying he was discriminated against for his sexual orientation.

Sweeney's sister, Susan, is a broadcaster for WFPL radio and is married to Denny Crum, the former Louisville basketball coach.

His father, Dick Sweeney, was a longtime program director for WHAS-TV.
