SHELBYVILLE, Ky -- In a shady neighborhood just blocks from downtown Shelbyville, in a duplex apartment, police said a woman was held captive at gun and knife-point and tortured for five days.

The suspect is 49-year-old Gary Harris.

A police report indicates he hit the victim over her head with a hammer, forced her to sit in a tub of scalding water and forced her to perform multiple sex acts.

Neighbors are stunned and frightened.

"Hearing about that, it's kind of scary, not knowing, obviously, what you're living next to," said a next door neighbor who didn't want to be identified.

She said she lived beside Harris for a month, but didn't often speak to him.

"We'd wave at him and he'd just kind of look at us and look away, no interaction, no 'hi', no nothing," the neighbor said.

We've discovered Harris has been charged multiple times for similar crimes, including a rape charge in North Carolina in 1996, an assault and unlawful imprisonment charge in Nelson County in 2009, and another assault and unlawful imprisonment case involving the most recent victim in Shelby County in 2011.

Harris allegedly hit one victim in the head with a hammer, stabbed another resulting in her going into a coma for two months and sexually abusing multiple female victims.

In all of those cases, charges were dismissed because Harris was found mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Court documents reveal that his sister-in-law said Harris bragged about getting out of felony charges by claiming to have mental problems.

He's scheduled to be arraigned on the latest charges tomorrow.
