(WHAS11)-It was a "personal best" for an Indianapolis woman from at the Rodes City Run Saturday.

She was surprised at the finish line by her husband who she thought was overseas in Iraq!

She's running alone, because her husband is serving in the Army in Iraq... or so she thinks.

“I'm surprising her. I missed her birthday, I missed V-day, my unit was kind enough to let me come home early to surprise her It will be awesome,” says Sgt. Maj. Steve Voller.

He runs the race and waits just steps from the finish line scanning the crowd for his wife, his high school sweetheart, who he calls "beautiful."

“It was shock! And I started to stop but I couldn't because I was at the finish line!" says Kristie Voller.

So the couple of 25 years crossed the finish line together, hand in hand for the first time in months.

This wasn’t the first time Steve has staged a surprise.

“Last year he was deployed and came home on my birthday to surprise me! So, two in a row,” says Kristie

He was supposed to be home this Tuesday. They will call Fort Knox home beginning next month, but this trip to Louisville is the one to remember.

“Exhilaration, it's so great to be back with my family. I always call her beautiful, so I said hey beautiful when I walked up, or ran up on her. It’s just awesome,” says Steve Voller.

A personal best for both!
