LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Students at St. Gabriel celebrated the spirit of the Christmas season by setting a record.

The school collected a record of 10,000 food items to donate to the food pantry at the Fern Creek Highview United Ministries.

Part of the food was used to make 60 Thanksgiving baskets that were handed out last week to needy families.

Members of St. Gabriel’s Student Council loaded the food onto a truck and had it delivered to the pantry.

Students say they participated so they could help others less fortunate.

“We did this to help the hungry in our community because how fortunate are we to have all our food and how they don’t have much,” student Justin DeWitt said.

The food will be used for Christmas baskets to be handed out later this month.
