NEW CASTLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Stem cell therapy on a goat can prove to be a breakthrough for your pets. Some pet owners call it a medical miracle.
A pet goat, Cinnamon, just had a life changing procedure in Henry County, a first of its kind.
It is a medical first and is the only stem cell procedure done on-location for a pet goat in a vet clinic in the world. The goat is receiving stem cell therapy for a torn ACL and bad carpal joints at the Henry County Animal Clinic in New Castle, Kentucky.
Before, vets had to wait for days while cells were sent to a West Coast lab. But now, within hours, they are injected back into Cinnamon's body to start healing.
"They're supercharged and ready to work. They automatically go to any inflamed area and with Dr. Slone doing I.V. we're probably going to see some side benefits to the goat," said Brenda Timperman with MediVet-America.
Within about a month of the procedure, Cinnamon should be moving well, with little or no pain.
Cats, dogs and even horses are seeing tremendous results from stem cell therapy. Franklin the Pug from Elizabethtown was once paralyzed from the waist down after a car accident. Instead of being euthanized, stem cell therapy has his legs moving again.
"The animals that were having problems jump right up and are a whole lot better," said veterinarian Dr. Clark Slone.
The new technology costs about $1,900 for dogs and cats, $2,400 for horses. Some clinics around the US have the stem cell kits, there are currently 3,000 kits.
MediVet-America said it was developed in Australia, the same type of therapy the Colts' Peyton Manning had done from human stem cell therapy.
