(WHAS11) - Kentucky’s governor now wants an explanation as to why a State Trooper in uniform was caught on tape watching a cockfight.
Governor Steve Beshear called the head of the State Police but won’t comment on the conversation other than to say that an internal investigation is being conducted.
The U.S. Humane Society says the video shows the officer at the Laurel Creek Game Club cockfighting pit.
A constable can also be seen in the video.
National Humane Society officials were in Frankfort Tuesday saying the video sends the message that law enforcement is tolerating cock fighting.
Kentucky State Police say they're internally investigating the trooper's actions.
Cockfighting is illegal but WHAS11 News has discovered that it's not being prosecuted in the Commonwealth.
In Frankfort there's a bill to change the law and make cockfighting a felony.
Several years ago, State Police made several raids at similar cockfighting arenas but hundreds arrested were let go do to the vagueness in the current Kentucky law.
In Clay County, where the video was apparently taken, there has not been a district court case for cockfighting in at least 17 years.
