Southern Indiana Standoff
That standoff between a man and police in New Albany has ended peacefully. Dozens of police and the New Albany SWAT team converged on a home off of Plantation Drive, near the Charlestown Road area.
Surrounded by officers and escorted out of his parents' house. That's how a two hour stand off ended in Floyd County Tuesday evening.
27-year-old John Pyle barricaded himself inside his parents' home after fighting with his father.
His father called 9-1-1 and warned police there were rifles, shotguns and handguns inside the home.
According to Sheriff Darrell Mills, tension in the family had been building for a while and things came to a head for the suspect.
"Apparently, the father and the 27-year-old son had a history of issues. His father was in the process of having him evicted from the house," said Floyd County Sheriff Darrell Mills.
In fact, he says, deputies served a warrant last week, restricting the suspect from being in or around the home.
But Tuesday, his father told police his son forced his way in.
"Apparently, he did damage getting into the house. Had an altercation with his father and then refused to come out of the house," said Sheriff Mills.
During the standoff, police told neighbors who were already inside, to stay there and kept everyone else back.
"The neighbor behind me said there were snipers in one of the kid's bedrooms down from our house... it's crazy," said neighbor Chris Conn.
And when Pyle surrendered, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"Usually this neighborhood is safe. For something like this to happen is shocking," said neighbor Katie Lemaster.
"It all went safely for everyone involved. We'll deal with the other issues later," said Sheriff Mills.
Those issues include which charges the Floyd County prosecutor will file.
The suspect's father, David Pyle, spoke off camera saying his son has a lot of problems. He says he wants to thank police and all of the people who helped make the stand off end peacefully.
