LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- University of Louisville guard Peyton Siva has been named to the Capital One District 2 Academic All-District 2 men’s basketball first team for the second straight year, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Inclusion on the all-district team will move him on to consideration for Capital One Academic All-America honors.
A 6-0 senior from Seattle, Wash., Siva has a 3.37 grade point average in sociology. The Cardinals’ starting point guard is among the BIG EAST leaders in assists (6.0, fourth; 28th in the nation), free throw percentage (.893, third, 19th in the nation), steals (2.1, fourth; 42nd in the nation) and assists-turnovers ratio (2.12, 9th). He became the Cardinals’ 64th career 1,000 point scorer (1,035 current total) this season and his 576 career assists rank second all-time at UofL.
Siva is one of 20 watch list finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, presented to the nation’s top point guard, and is one of 30 candidates for the 2012-13 Senior CLASS Award. His preseason honors included Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, first team All-America by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, second team All-America by ESPN.com, and third team All-America by The Sporting News. Siva received the 2011-12 BIG EAST Conference Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award for men’s basketball.
Other student-athletes on the five-man all-district team include Temple University guard T.J. DiLeo, George Washington University forward Nemanja Mikic and Bucknell University guard Bryson Johnson and forward/center Mike Muscala. The academic all-district teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada, with District 2 encompassing NCAA Division I schools from the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Kentucky, West Virginia, Delaware, Maryland as well as the District of Columbia.
To be eligible for the honor, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA.
