LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- An shooting investigation is underway in Valley Station after a man suffering a gunshot wound to his face was found in the parking lot of an abandoned church.

Police said the victim, described as a male in his 40s, was found by a passerby in the parking lot of St. Peter the Apostle church on 10800 block of Deering Road early Thursday morning.

The Good Samaritan called 911 and stayed with the victim until emergency crews arrived. He was transported to University of Louisville Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said they found a Ford Escape near where the victim was located and believe it may be connected to the shooting.

Neighbors in the area said the church has been vacant for years and they have seen a lot of vehicles enter the parking lot, stay for a short time and then leave.

Police said it is not clear at this time if the man was shot while at the parking lot or another location.
