(WHAS11) – Absolute chaos in downtown Louisville and witnesses say a drunk, mad man was brazenly waving a handgun and threatening people.

It happened just before rush hour Thursday afternoon at Liberty and Preston streets.

Sirens blazing...

Police officers frantically running to the scene... officers strapped with assault rifles...

And a bloody man was taken away on a stretcher...

Kenneth Winfield says he saw the "OK corral" in downtown Louisville... when a police officer shot a man who pointed a gun at him.

Witnesses say it started when that man was wandering around Liberty and Preston threatening people with that gun.

Police say he even tried to carjack two women in a car.

"He got inside the car, pointed a gun towards the victims. They called the police," LMP Chief Robert White said.

Those women got away... and Kenneth says he also spotted two nearby officers.

"I told them there was a dude running over there with a gun. When I went and told them he went this way,” Kenneth said. “He ran in this parking lot."

"Officers confronted him. He was armed. That’s when they confronted them. Raised it toward him. One of them fired several shots," LMP Chief White said.

Police took the man to University Hospital...
Some witnesses say they saw the man before the shootout and something wasn't right.

"I just think he was drunk. When he came up to me he was acting drunk," Winfield said.

No officers were injured and the suspect is said to be in stable condition.
But for about 5 long minutes, witnesses say if felt like big city crime came to Louisville.

"I'm from New York so I've seen it before, soo... but I didn't see anything like this in Louisville and I've been here since '98," Winfield said.
