Man dies after Thunder; struck while walking on River Road

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A Shelbyville man has died from his injuries after being hit by an SUV Saturday night just a few hours after Thunder Over Louisville.

Police say for some unknown reason, 22-year-old Mike Purnell of Shelbyville KY, walked into the path of an SUV just after midnight.

Purnell was struck on River Road near the eastern edge of Cox Park, close to the Indian Hills Police Department Headquarters.

The Jefferson County Coroner says Purnell died Monday at 1:43 a.m. at University Hospital.

The driver of the Grand Jeep Cherokee and other witnesses told Police that Purnell walked into the path of the vehicle.

No charges are being filed against the Jeep's driver. 

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Shannon Funeral Home in Shelbyville.

Michael Scott "Mike" Purnell, II, 22, of Shelbyville died Monday, April 14, 2014 in Louisville.
He was a graduate of Shelby County High School and a member of Simpsonville Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Olando Jean Simpson; grandfather, Fred B. Purnell and grandmother, Jean T. Purnell.
He is survived by his parents, Michael and Vanessa Purnell, Shelbyville; sisters, Nerissa Sparkman, Miami, Fl; Katelyn Purnell, Shelbyville; and grandmother, Shelby Simpson, Knott Co., KY.
The Rev. Steve Boyd and Rev. Don Waterfill will be officiating.
