INDIANAPOLIS (WHAS) – A 7-year-old died after a fire forced residents to jump from an apartment complex on Indianapolis’ west side around 3:30 A.M.
Four residents were forced to jump from the second story including the mother of the 7-year-old.
She told firefighters she tried to take her son with her as she jumped but lost her grip on him in the heat and smoke.
“It was crazy. People screaming, yelling, glass breaking, people jumping out of windows. [I] saw a guy hurt his ankle and one girl hurt her arm,” resident Craig Cruzan said.
“I jumped out on that deck, ran around and they jumped out from windows up there too,” Bobby Richmond said.
Five residents and one firefighter were injured.
Fire officials say there were no working smoke detectors in the building.
