(WHAS11)-- Some lawmakers are calling for companies like Target to be held more accountable when it comes to security breaches.
New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez says he is considering suggesting new laws to help fight the problem.
Menendez spoke in Jersey City Thursday, saying there needs to be consequences for retailers when security breaches happen.
"Now we've gone through about three major data breaches in this country of consumers' cards, credit cards,” Menendez said. “It seems to me that at this point what we need is to have the ability to levy fines and penalties."
Target has not disclosed details of how the security breach occurred, but they said it has fixed the problem.
