(WHAS11) – Cell phones could be a lifeline or just a piece of mind during a disaster such as a tornado.

The fear was a reality for students and parents last year in Moore, Oklahoma.

Beginning this school year, a policy change will allow students to bring their cell phones to class.

Parents say the change will allow for better communication in the event of another disaster.

School leaders say it may also help curb students’ fears about severe weather in the future.

24 people, including 9 children were killed when the EF-5 tornado struck on May 20, 2013.
