LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NEWS RELEASE) -- The Northbound I-65 ramp closure scheduled for Sunday will be delayed until Monday night.

The exit ramps from northbound I-65 to eastbound I-64/northbound I-71 and westbound I-64 will not be closed until Monday, June 25th at 8 p.m. and will remain closed for 15 days. Crews delayed closing these ramps in an effort to make some adjustments to help with traffic flow. Motorists should follow the signed detour via I-264.

The exit ramps from southbound I-65 to eastbound I-64/northbound I-71 and westbound I-64 were closed on Saturday evening and will remain closed for the next 10 days.  Motorists should follow the signed detour via westbound I-265 to I-64.

Both the northbound and southbound ramps were originally scheduled for closure on Sunday night, but repairs were ahead of schedule on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge.

The contractor, MAC Construction and Excavating, of New Albany, Ind., had estimated three days to remove a section of median barrier wall from the center of the bridge and construct a temporary cross-over so one northbound lane can be used for southbound traffic.  This work will be accomplished in two days and the next phase of construction can begin one day ahead of schedule.

“As anticipated, we observed major traffic delays during the first day of lane closures on the Kennedy Bridge and the approaching interstates,” said Matt Bullock, chief district engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Department of Highways District 5, in Louisville. “We are pleased with any progress the contractor makes that will reduce the amount of impact to the motoring public, even if it is just for one day.”

Lane closures on the Kennedy Bridge began on Thursday evening June 21st and are scheduled to remain in place through the end of July. During this time crews will be replacing expansion joints, patching concrete and installing an asphalt waterproofing membrane for the driving surface. The project area is along I-65 from the Main Street overpass in Louisville to the north end of the bridge in southern Indiana (mile points 136.2 to 137.3).  Repairs will also be performed on four ramp bridges in the I-65/I-64 interchange.

Two lanes of traffic on the bridge will be maintained in each direction during the project.  That will require traffic to be shifted to the opposite side of the bridge at certain phases.  Vehicles wider than 9 feet are restricted from traveling through the work zone.

During construction, several ramps on each side of the bridge and in the I-65/I-64 interchange will be closed.  Motorists must follow the signed detours during these closures.

The following ramps are currently closed and will remain closed for the duration of the project:

•    The exit ramp from eastbound I-64 to northbound I-65 in Kentucky
•    The exit ramp from southbound I-65 to Market Street in Indiana
•    The entrance ramp from Court Avenue to southbound I-65 in Indiana
