LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. (AP) -- Police shot a 31-year-old man following a standoff that triggered a brief evacuation in a southeastern Indiana town.

State police spokesman Sgt. Noel Houze Jr. says officers arrested William C. Hoffman Jr. after he was wounded during a shootout with officers late Thursday night in Lawrenceburg, about 20 miles west of Cincinnati.

Houze says Hoffman went inside after police arrived about 8:45 p.m. and later briefly returned to the porch with a handgun. He says about 11 p.m. Hoffman began shooting from inside at officers, who returned fire. Police stormed the house about 3 a.m. and arrested Hoffman.

Hoffman was treated and released from University Hospital in Cincinnati for the gunshot wound he received during the exchange of gunfire with police.  Since he had to be transported to Ohio for treatment, he is being held in the Hamilton County Justice Center in Cincinnati and will remain there until such time as he either waives extradition back to Indiana or a formal extradition hearing is held and extradition proceedings force him back to Indiana.

Hoffman faces preliminary charges of criminal recklessness.

Police say no one else was in the house during the standoff.
